Our Story
It all started in a small garage in California back in the summer of 1975. Our founder John Smith had fond childhood memories of playing with watermelons as makeshift pool toys. As an inventor and entrepreneur, John decided to create durable, lightweight balls perfectly shaped like watermelons.
After months of design and testing, John had achieved the perfect watermelon beach ball. He took his prototype to a local beach shop and they agreed to sell it for the upcoming summer. To both his and the shop owner’s delight, the ball was an instant hit with kids and adults alike!
Encouraged by the demand, John rented a small warehouse, bought a batch of industrial sewing machines, and started mass producing his Watermelon Balls. He drove up and down the West Coast selling them directly to beach shops. Within two summers, the Watermelon Ball was being sold by retailers across the country.
Over the years, we have expanded the Watermelon Ball line from a single beach ball to a wide variety of watermelon-shaped balls for both recreation and sports. But our original beach ball remains our most popular item. There’s just something about the look and feel of our Watermelon Ball that brings back fond summer memories for generations of customers.

While our Watermelon Balls are made for play, we take quality seriously when it comes to materials and construction. Each ball is carefully designed and manufactured to meet or exceed all applicable toy safety standards.
The PVC plastic we use is non-toxic, BPA-free, and lead-free. Our proprietary formula produces an ideal balance of flexibility and durability to withstand years of sun, chlorine, and active play.
Inside every ball is our tough Tri-TechTM bladder made of heavy-duty natural latex rubber. The triple layer construction prevents leaks and punctures better than a standard single bladder. Special water balancing beads give our balls superior shape retention and ball control compared to cheap vinyl bladders.
We oversee production in our own state-of-the-art factory located right here in California. From materials sourcing to final testing, every Watermelon Ball passes through strict quality control checkpoints. Our experienced production team takes pride in making balls that meet our lofty standards for safety, performance, and fun.

Giving Back
Giving back to our community has been a core value since the early days in John’s garage. As a small starting business, he donated balls for charity raffles and little league tournaments.
Today we proudly continue supporting youth sports, schools, community events, and nonprofit organizations across the country. Our Giving Back program provides Watermelon Balls to hundreds of worthy groups each year. Requests can be submitted on our website for consideration.
We also partner with food banks to donate fresh watermelons in our headquarters community. Getting watermelons into the hands of those facing food insecurity is a special passion. Our staff volunteers time serving during melon distributions so we can connect with the people we aim to help.
